World Water Day 2025: Protecting Water, Protecting the Future

World Water Day, celebrated annually on March 22, serves as a reminder of the importance of water for life and the need for its sustainable management. This year’s theme is " Glacier preservation" highlighting the critical role glaciers play as sources of freshwater and the urgent need to protect them from climate change.
The Critical Importance of Glacier Conservation
As global temperatures rise, our frozen world is disappearing at an alarming rate, disrupting the natural water cycle. Glaciers, which feed rivers and lakes, are melting faster than ever, making water availability unpredictable and hazardous.
For billions of people worldwide, changes in water flow mean severe floods, prolonged droughts, frequent landslides, and rising sea levels, threatening entire communities. The risk of loss of life, destruction of crops, and displacement of populations increases daily.
Protecting glaciers must be a priority in the global fight against climate change. To slow their retreat, we must drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions and transition immediately to sustainable water management practices. Preserving these valuable water resources is not just an environmental issue—it is a matter of survival for our planet and future generations.
The Power of Water
Water connects every aspect of life. Access to safe water and sanitation can quickly turn problems into opportunities—giving people time for education and work while improving the health of women, children, and families worldwide.
2.2 billion people lack access to safe water.
3.5 billion people lack access to safe sanitation facilities.
Women and children—especially girls in many countries—are primarily responsible for water collection, spending 200 million hours daily on this task.
Over 1 million people die annually due to lack of access to safe water and sanitation facilities, with a child losing their life every two minutes from water- or sanitation-related diseases.
29% of schools lack access to basic water and sanitation facilities.
$260 billion is lost globally each year due to a lack of essential water and sanitation services.
At least 50% of the world’s population, approximately 4 billion people—experience severe water scarcity for at least one month per year.
